Dear friend,

As we approach the end of the year and all of the obligations that come with it, we at United Way reflect on one of our cornerstone pillars, health. Good health is critical for children to grow and develop, and for adults to live full and productive lives. This month, our October newsletter is dedicated to our collective work in this important area.
Through my work at United Way over the years, I have seen the evolution of needs in our community and the means of addressing them. At United Way, we embrace a comprehensive approach that includes advocacy, program investments, partnerships, public awareness campaigns and capacity building. In the health arena, our focus is on improving access to physical, behavioral and oral health care; healthy lifestyles; and aging with maximal health and independence.
In this month’s newsletter, you’ll learn how our partnership with FamilyWize, a program established to provide more affordable prescription medications to everyone, has led to local savings of over $15 million; how our longstanding impact partner, Citrus Health Network, is changing the landscape on mental health; and how our very own Community Cupboard is helping to feed our community’s families.
Together, we are investing in healthy lifestyles so that everyone across the age spectrum can lead full and productive lives. With your generous support, we are continuing to make an impact in our community and building a stronger Miami for all.
Best,
Mary Donworth Group Vice President, Community Impact

Miami-Dade families save big
More than 520,000 households are struggling to make ends meet in Miami-Dade. Because of this, tough choices are made every day, and staying up to date with medications can be a difficult task. Through our partnership with FamilyWize, over 150,000 members of the community have saved more than $15 million on prescription medications.

Staying fresh in Miami’s ever-growing mental health landscape
Citrus Health Network, a United Way of Miami-Dade impact partner for over 25 years, started as a mental health center in 1979. Since then, its services have grown exponentially and continue to diversify. Two funded programs in particular are making major strides at serving our community’s most vulnerable.

Feeding our families
For those of our neighbors who earn just above the Federal Poverty Level but can barely cover the basics, food insecurity can be a real issue. With your support, our United Way Community Cupboard has found a way to feed our community’s families when they have needed it most.

Celebrating a milestone for financial stability
Just 10 years ago, during one of the most uncertain financial times in the history of this country, the United Way Center for Financial Stability was created based on a community need. Launched in partnership with Branches in October of 2009, the Center has helped thousands of families find their way.

Contributor Spotlight
Nick Landera
Manager, Appelrouth, Farah & Co.
"I’ve been involved with United Way Young Leaders and the Health Impact Council for over five years. I’ve had the opportunity to meet other professionals, community leaders, and engage in productive discussions designed to promote growth and community engagement.
With the Health Impact Council, I’ve been able to learn and get familiar with certain aspects of the community that I wouldn’t have otherwise understood. I’m excited about the progress we’ve made. It is vital to promote healthy lifestyles and assist the community to ensure that proper care is given to older generations and those with disabilities.
It has been a rewarding experience to work with such passionate individuals that have a genuine desire to support the under-served and make our community a better place for everyone."
