Feeding our families

For those of our neighbors who earn just above the Federal Poverty Level but can barely cover the basics, food insecurity can be a real issue.  With your support, our United Way Community Cupboard has found a way to feed our community’s families when they have needed it most.

In 2011, the United Way Center for Excellence in Early Education launched the Community Cupboard to help families that do not receive regular food assistance by providing them with – on average – 28 pounds of food monthly.

First opened on the second floor of the United Way Michael B. Fernandez Family Building, the cupboard finally gave hope to families who did not qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program.

Because of its popularity and a grant from McCormick, the Early Head Start-Child Care Partnership program (EHS-CCP) replicated the cupboard at New World Academy I in Liberty City in 2015. Since then, another generous grant, this time from Wells Fargo, allowed our United Way to sponsor a nutritionist and increase the hours of operation for the Cupboards.

These Community Cupboards rely solely on donations, and each feed eight to 30 families a month, with anywhere from two to 12 people in a family. Our United Way volunteers make numerous monthly visits to Feeding South Florida, collecting nonperishable food to stock our Cupboards. Companies, churches and schools also donate.
