JANUARY NEWSLETTER

white space Dear friend,

As we usher in the New Year, many of us look forward to new goals. While education, health and wellness are commonly among the top of everyone’s list — and certainly at the forefront of our work — another one of our pillars, financial stability, becomes an area of focus for many in our community this time of year.

Financial independence and empowerment are worthwhile goals — and can be achieved with help from our United Way. Establishing a savings plan is a way of becoming financially independent — and just one of the ways we help working families by connecting them to the tools, training and opportunities needed to secure their financial future.

As a result, our January newsletter is all about financial stability. Below, you’ll learn more about the free tax services we offer through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program; and our new focus on affordable housing as part of our advocacy work locally and in Tallahassee, among other stories. We look forward to working with you, as well as our agency and community partners, to make 2019 a prosperous year.

Best,

white space Help in the fight for affordable housing

We as a community can take action to help improve the affordable housing crisis. Together, Florida’s United Ways have developed a Consensus Legislative Agenda for the 2019 Florida Legislature that addresses the challenges working families and individuals barely making ends meet face. Find out how you can help.

Our United Way partners with Jackson Health System for UW@WORK. Thanks to a Citi Foundation Community Progress Makers grant, we’re now reaching people at their workplace and helping them secure a healthy financial future.

“I am thrilled to be volunteering as a financial coach for the Center for Financial Stability (CFS). When I was looking at volunteer opportunities, I focused on areas where I could work directly with the community. I also learned over the years that taking on roles that tap into your skills is as important for volunteer roles as it is with paid work. The CFS seemed like a perfect fit. I have already seen that the CFS touches many people's lives in an impactful way. As financial coaches, we work with individuals and families to help them solve both urgent financial needs as well as help them make progress towards asset accumulation and feeling more financially secure.

“Being a recent transplant to Miami, committing energy to [help] the Miami-Dade's ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) population feels purposeful and productive. The CFS team is an impressive group that has been very welcoming and supportive.”
