Helping Seniors Thrive in Our Community

In honor of National Senior Citizens Day on August 21, we're proud to highlight how our Health & Wellbeing pillar, one of our Core Four, is making a difference for older adults in our community. Through our partnership with SingleCare, United Way Miami helps seniors access essential medications at a reduced cost, ensuring they can manage their health without the burden of high prescription prices. Over the past 16 years, this partnership has filled more than 555,000 prescriptions, saving older adults and others in our community more than $22 million. By providing these critical savings, we're helping our seniors live healthier, more secure lives.

Back-to-School: Discover Our CEO’s Insights on the Power of Education

In her latest blog, our President and CEO, Symeria Hudson, delves into the transformative power of education, one of our Core Four pillars. She reflects on education's vital role in empowering individuals and shaping stronger communities. The blog highlights the importance of supporting students and teachers alike as they begin a new school year. Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS), one of our largest Employee Giving Campaign partners, has been integral to our success, raising more than $1.2 million this year and helping us reach even more students and teachers.

As we embark on a new school year, we're proud to share that our 2024 Back-to-School Drive was a tremendous success. Thanks to over 330 volunteer hours, we provided more than 1,000 children with essential supplies, ensuring they have the tools they need to excel academically.

Building Resilient Communities for 100 years

As we mark 100 years of service, we're proud to showcase our Resilient Communities pillar, reaffirming our deep-rooted commitment to fostering strong, safe neighborhoods. A key initiative under this pillar is our $100,000-plus annual investment in drowning prevention over the next three years, which will save countless young lives.

United Way Miami has joined forces with Miami-Dade County's top public and private sector organizations in the Zero Drownings Miami-Dade initiative, which aims to reach 20,000 children annually. This critical program addresses the leading cause of death among children ages 1 - 9 in Miami-Dade—drowning.

Zero Drownings Miami-Dade will provide free swimming lessons for 4-year-olds and 5-year-olds, integrate water safety education for families and launch a communitywide water safety campaign. We're proud to be part of this vital initiative, which embodies the spirit of our Resilient Communities pillar.

A Day of Impact with United Way Miami and BITTS

On Wednesday, August 21, United Way Miami had a day filled with impactful moments at the Barrington Irving Technical Training School (BITTS)! We began with a professional development workshop, where UpSkill Miami students engaged in mock interviews, paving the way for their future success.

The excitement continued as we took the spotlight on NBC 6 South Florida. News Anchor Jawan Strader, President & CEO Symeria Hudson, Captain Barrington Irving and Vontre, a recent UpSkill Miami graduate, showcased the incredible progress made through our program. Thanks to his aviation maintenance training, Vontre is now thriving in one of Miami's top industries.

Through United Way Miami's core pillar, Economic Mobility, we offer wrap-around services, including mentorship, financial literacy education, and ongoing support, to ensure long-term success for individuals like Vontre. We're proud of the strides being made and grateful for the continued support from our community.
