M-DCPS Raises More Than $1.2 Million, Continues to Lead the Country as one of the top United Way School Systems Campaign
MIAMI, FL (Feb.17, 2023) – More than 300 students, teachers, administrators, and staff from Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) gathered at Jungle Island last month to celebrate the 2022-23 United Way Miami community fundraising campaign. The school district’s campaign raised more than $1.2 million cementing its status as one of the leading United Way school system campaigns in the country once again.
During the annual breakfast, top-performing schools that met or exceeded their fundraising goals were recognized along with their students, teachers, and administrators who were vital in making the campaign a success. Norman S. Edelcup/Sunny Isles Community School K-8 raised the most funds for both the student-led and employee-led campaigns and was crowned the Grand Champion.
WSVN morning news anchor Tavares Jones emceed the program, which included remarks from United Way Miami President & CEO Symeria Hudson, M-DCPS Superintendent Dr. Jose L. Dotres, M-DCPS Board Chair Mari Tere Rojas, and United Teachers of Dade President Karla Hernandez-Mats.
“I am moved to see the deep connection between United Way Miami and Miami-Dade County Public Schools,” said Symeria Hudson, President and CEO of United Way Miami. “We are truly united in our desire to build a stronger Miami and equitable community for all. It was an honor to recognize the students, teachers, and administrators for their generosity and continued support of United Way Miami. Miami-Dade continues to be the leading United Way fundraising campaign in the country thanks to their extraordinary efforts. We are grateful to Superintendent Dr. Jose Dotres and his entire staff for making this possible once again. I look forward to celebrating many more groundbreaking campaigns together.”
“I applaud the magnitude at which our students and employees give back to our community,” said M-DCPS Superintendent Dr. Jose L. Dotres who dubbed the awards program the “Oscars of Giving.” “The success of this campaign reflects the commitment of our students and employees to their community. United Way Miami provides over 100 programs, many directly through our schools, that help alleviate the hardships that we see our families and neighbors experiencing every day. We may not be facing these difficult issues today, but if by chance our circumstances change, it is reassuring to know that United Way will be there to help us.”
M-DCPS and United Way Miami have worked together for nearly 50 years to raise funds to support a stronger Miami and build an equitable community for all. The annual campaign remains the country’s number one United Way school system fundraising campaign. The funds raised by M-DCPS support over 100 United Way Miami-funded programs working to ensure everyone has access to quality education and the opportunity to live healthy and financially secure lives – the building blocks of a thriving community.
