Gladys R. Montes

As we start a new school year, our August newsletter’s focus is on education.

As vice president of United Way Center for Excellence in Early Education, I am very proud of what we have accomplished since we opened our doors 12 years ago – from data-driven strategies to enhancing qualifications for teachers, promoting family engagement and offering dual language curriculum.

Our Center continues to reach new heights. This past year, we received high marks in two national studies for our work in Head Start and Early Head Start as delivering transformational results. By providing high-quality early education, we create a ripple effect in our community and prepare our children for success and the best possible start in school and in life.

In this month’s newsletter, you will learn more on how we continue to level the playing field for our community’s children by expanding our reach to low-income areas through new initiatives, providing children with access to STEM and empowering families to become involved in their children’s schooling and development.

We are investing in the education of our future leaders. With your help, we can continue to impact the community through our work in education – and fight for a stronger Miami.

Best,

It is easy to see the joy in Lila’s eyes. “She is my little piece of sunshine,” Marcella will say to anyone who meets her and her daughter – but life has not always been easy.

white space Gardening helps grow young minds in our community

A garden adds a pleasant aesthetic to its surroundings. For children, it can open the doors to a career in STEM – science, technology, engineering and math – pathways that are often overlooked by those that are underserved in our community.

Co-Chair, United Way of Miami-Dade School-Aged Education Impact Council

"My engagement with United Way has made it easier to live with intention and take the initiative to make a visible difference in the community around me.

I have experienced firsthand United Way’s thorough and evidence-based methodology for vetting agencies applying for funding. The effort mobilizes talents of volunteers across the board, identifying critically underserved communities where the dollar will go the furthest.

The collective impact that United Way has on our communities reiterates our interconnectedness and it reminds us that every voice needs to be heard and every life matters.”
