United Way Miami's Board Chair, Penny Shaffer, Ph.D., shares her reflections and aspirations as we commemorate our centennial anniversary - an incredible journey spanning #100YearsUnited of impact and dedication to our community.

How does witnessing United Way embarking on such an incredible milestone feel?

"I am proud of the legacy of giving (time, talent and treasure) represented in the 100 years of history and the continued multigenerational commitment to our community and neighbors."

During your time with United Way, what is your fondest memory?

"Visiting a senior center and dancing with a sweet octogenarian who was slightly annoyed at the impact the BlackBerry affixed to my waist had on his ability to lead!"

What are your aspirations for United Way as the organization enters its second century?

"I hope we continue to be the trusted voice for our community needs and trusted conduit to involve all as we work to meet those needs."

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Penny for her countless years of service to our organization and, most importantly, the families and children we serve. Your dedication and leadership have profoundly impacted our community. Thank you for championing our mission to build a stronger Miami for all, contributing to our #100YearsUnited legacy!

Leading the Way this National Volunteer Month

This National Volunteer Month, volunteers from United Way's Giving Communities and corporate sponsors joined forces during our Leaders Day of Action on Saturday, April 6, to revitalize our agency partner, New Horizons Community Mental Health Center. Together, we transformed the center into a vibrant haven of comfort and support for their staff and the families they serve. With engaging activities like colorful mural painting sessions and landscaping projects, everyone had a blast while making a meaningful impact. Thank you to all who pitched in and supported this year's event!

VeritageMiami Raises More Than $1 Million in Support of United Way Miami

Hundreds of wine and food enthusiasts gathered for the 2024 edition of VeritageMiami. In its 28th year, VeritageMiami was presented by City National Bank, a longtime supporter and sponsor for decades, and chaired by Patricia and José Mas for the second year in a row.

The festivities kicked off on March 6 with the Wine and Food Experience at The Hangar at Regatta Harbour in Coconut Grove, where guests embarked on a delightful journey for the palate with food and wine from across the globe.

The Interactive Dinner, a truly unique culinary experience, took place on April 19 at the InterContinental Miami Hotel in downtown Miami, featuring celebrity chef Jeremy Ford of Michelin-starred Stubborn Seed. The dinner also included an impressive line-up of silent and live auctions.

The event series raised more than $1,000,000 to support United Way Miami’s impactful work in education, financial stability and health.

Championing Early Education

Raising Excellence

Since opening its doors in 2007, the United Way Center for Excellence in Early Education (CFE) has impacted the lives of more than 60,000 children.

As we reflect on our 100-year history, we wanted to highlight one of our remarkable alums, George Lombard Jr. Lombard attended the Demonstration school in 2008 and is now a professional baseball player for the New York Yankees. His journey from our Demonstration School to the big leagues is a shining example of the power of quality early education instilled at the CFE.

In George's own words...

How has the United Way Center for Excellence in Early Education impacted your life?

“I strongly believe the United Way Center for Excellence in Early Education had a tremendous impact on my academic journey. I had great teachers who piqued my interest not just in books but in music and art, with all the programs they had available to us. They created a nurturing environment where children can thrive academically and socially while receiving the support they need to reach their full potential. Our classroom had a special group, I met one of my best friends at the CFE. I truly believe that early education is vital in fostering a love for learning in someone’s life, and I’ll always be grateful to have had the opportunity to attend CFE.”

What is your most cherished memory of the CFE?

“I remember taking part in so many fun, hands-on activities, but a couple stand out. During the summer, we had water days, and I think it was once a week. They would set up all types of water activities outside and we played. I also remember we had a garden just outside our classroom that I would look forward to going to school for our garden activity.”

We wish George the best in his career and want to express how proud we are of his achievements!
