With Zika in our region, it is important to be informed and protect yourself and your family against this virus. Here are some basic facts:
Transmission: Zika is spread mainly through the bite of an infected mosquito, sexual contact and from a mother to her unborn child. Pregnant women are advised to be particularly careful to protect themselves against Zika.
Prevention: The best way to prevent Zika is to protect yourself from mosquito bites.
- Cover skin with long-sleeved shirts and long pants
- Use DEET or other insect repellants
- Take steps to control mosquitoes inside and outside your home; remove all standing water where mosquitoes lay eggs.
Symptoms: Signs and symptoms may include acute onset of low-grade fever, rash, joint pain, conjunctivitis (reddening of eye), body aches, headache, eye pain, and vomiting. There is currently no specific treatment against the virus. Illness typically resolves within a week.
