Cheers to you and to building community

Volunteers on Tap is series of giving back with a social twist, where United Way collaborates with local restaurants, bars, and breweries to host volunteer events. Cheer and chat with your friends, and at the same time, help us fight for a #StrongerMiami by coming together to improve the odds for children and families throughout Miami-Dade. When you volunteer, you support meaningful change by helping us address and respond to our communities’ needs, like:

Childhood hunger. One in five kids in South Florida go to bed hungry every night, and many families depend on free and reduced meals during school hours. On weekends and school breaks, hunger doesn’t take a holiday. To ensure children in United Way’s Early Head Start-Child Care Partnership centers have nutritious snacks when they will not be in school, volunteers have sorted thousands of snacks into reusable grocery bags for families to take home before a school break.

Early literacy. Children in low-income households are exposed to an average of 25 hours of one-on-one reading as opposed to 1,700 hours for children in middle-class households. Increasing the number of books available at home increases opportunities to read with others and leads to overall improvement of literacy skills. To provide access to books for children that participate in ReadingPals, a statewide early literacy initiative, volunteers have packed hundreds of literacy kits with take-home books, activities, and resources for the whole family.

School supplies. The national average that families spend during back-to-school season is $1,017, for supplies, extracurricular fees, uniforms, etc. Such costs impact the financial stability of families, and students who attend school without the tools to succeed are more likely to have social and emotional challenges. To ease the financial stress for families served by Communities in Schools Miami, volunteers have collected supplies and stuffed hundreds of backpacks with tools recommended by Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

We facilitate Volunteers on Tap quarterly. Visit VolunteerMiami for details on our next event.
