United Way Youth Institute students are standing strong against gun violence

An average of 30 youth are killed annually in Miami-Dade County. Our United Way Youth Institute students are taking a stand and working together so their voices can be heard.

Our United Way Youth Institute hosted a panel discussion, as part of a year-long student program that focuses on empowering at-risk local youth, ages 14-18, to become successful in their careers, life-long community advocates, global citizens and agents of change. Teenage students and families shared tragic, personal stories and their experience with gun violence in the hopes of making a difference for generations to come.

The panel offered hope and empowered teenagers and their families to take a stand against gun violence.

Panelists included:

  • Russell Benford, vice president, Royal Caribbean Cruises
  • Raymond Carvil, retired police major, City of Miami Police Department
  • Morris Copeland, director, Miami-Dade County Juvenile Services Department (JSD)
  • Representative Shevrin Jones, Florida House District 101
  • Conrad Thomas, architecture student, Florida International University
  • Lisa Martinez, chief strategy officer, Miami-Dade County Public Schools
