United Way of Miami-Dade is partnering with members of South Florida’s hard-hit hospitality industry to virtually enjoy a meal, a glass of wine or meet for a cocktail, all for the good of our community. In hospitality parlance, the “back of the house” is where the action happens to create the customers’ experience in the “front of the house.” With bars, wine bars and restaurants mostly closed by the coronavirus pandemic, we will virtually take our guests to the back of the house for a more intimate, and even, more enjoyable, hospitality experience.
Our host, James Beard Award-winning wine and food journalist and educator (and VeritageMiami director) Lyn Farmer, will welcome leading hospitality professionals to our virtual kitchen table each month to share wine, food, stories and sensations. The series kicks off in October with Lyn’s fellow James Beard Award-winner, chef Michael Schwartz. In November, we welcome winemaker Bruce Neyers for a tasting of three of his wines (all perfect for Thanksgiving!) and in December, world-class mixologist Gabe Urrutia will lead us through some classic preparations suitable for holiday entertaining.
Back of the House with chef Michael Schwartz
Wednesday, October 14 ∙ 6:30 – 7:45 pm
The Back of the House series kicks off with an exciting three-course dinner for two led by James Beard Award-winning chef Michael Schwartz of Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink, with wines curated by his beverage director and sommelier Amanda Fraga!
Back of the House with winemaker Bruce Neyers
Wednesday, November 18 ∙ 6:30 – 7:45 pm
Our second virtual event of the series revolves around wine and one of America’s most entertaining winemakers, Bruce Neyers. Bruce and his wife Barbara founded their winery in Napa’s Sage Canyon in 1999, and they bridge both the Old and New Worlds to make some of the most delicious wines that your guests are likely to pour this autumn.
Back of the House holiday cocktail celebration with Gabe Urrutia
Wednesday, December 9 ∙ 6:30 – 7:45 pm
Expert mixologist Gabe Urrutia stands behind the virtual bar to share legends and lore from the world of classic cocktails. Gabe has been the top mixologist and brand ambassador for some of the world’s major spirits brands, and he has a wonderfully engaging way to give even the novice cocktailian some great tips for creating spirited holidays.
