Our community unites to help Surfside and Haiti

Over the course of the summer months, our community leaped into action donating over $1.1M and volunteering to help local Surfside residents after the tragic building collapse as well as our Haitian neighbors following the destructive earthquake in their country. Find out below how your Operation Heling Hands donations have helped those affected thus far.

Haiti Earthquake Relief

United Way Miami and Miami Herald/El Nuevo Herald activated Operation Helping Hands to help victims of the August 14 Haiti earthquake. Our United Way is working with community partners Sant La Haitian Neighborhood Center, Miami-Dade County and nonprofits in the affected areas to support both immediate and long-term recovery needs. In addition, we are working with Food For The Poor, who we have partnered with in Haiti for disasters in the past and are also working with Global Empowerment Mission who is shipping items to the country.

We’ve also provided 110 registered volunteers to receive, sort and support warehouse operations totaling 289 hours.

Our United Way is continuing the collaboration with our partners to coordinate response efforts, assess the needs and advise on the deployment of recovery and relief resources to the people of this nation.

To date, we have raised over $435,000 for this humanitarian effort.

Surfside Building Collapse Relief

Operation Helping Hands was also activated in June to support and assist victims and families impacted by the building collapse in Surfside with their short and long-term needs. Our United Way was immediately in communication with the County as a partner, provided communications, staff, and supported the Red Cross (emergency case management) and Jewish Community Services (mental health) among others.

American Airlines provided 3,000,000 AAdvantage miles for family reunifications and our United Way helped coordinate the fulfilment. 51 victim households used the miles and 151 flights were booked.

To date we have raised nearly $700K for family relief.
