United Way of Miami-Dade takes aim at creating lasting change during National Volunteer Week

Join United Way in celebrating its first virtual and in-person National Volunteer Week, April 17 – 23

Volunteers packed hygiene kits for college students in need.

Coming off a difficult year of navigating the COVID-19 pandemic, United Way of Miami-Dade invites Miamians to give of their time during National Volunteer Week, April 17-23. Hosting a variety of opportunities benefiting the community, community members will be able to create meaningful change to uplift our neighbors and advance our community towards a brighter future. This year the goal is to positively impact more than 1,000 families through the different volunteer and crowdfunding opportunities available. To learn more and register, visit www.unitedwaymiami.org/nvw2021

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are welcome to sign up for different shifts and for as many opportunities as they would like. Children are welcome to participate but must be accompanied by an adult.

  • Connect with an Older Adult (April 19): this activity will pair volunteers with older adults who are facing isolation due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic to create long-term bonds. The program will include an introductory training followed by organic written communication between each volunteer and older adult.
  • Earth Day (April 22)volunteers will build sustainable early education kits celebrating Earth Day. The kits will contain books and activities that invite children to learn healthy habits and promote support for environmental protection. Completed kits will be sent out to families in the community.
  • VolunteerMiami Day (April 24): support 500 local families in need of access to critical resources for everyday life by packing and distributing early literacy kits for children, hygiene kits for young women, hurricane preparedness kits and non-perishable food packs for families impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
    • Volunteers can also support by donating to provide a variety of kits in honor of United Way’s 97th anniversary. Donate here.

Volunteering has been shown to benefit both those that are volunteering and the community they are assisting. Through volunteerism, individuals can build new skills and relationships, reduce stress and remain physically and mentally active according to the Mayo Clinic Health System.

Children received literacy kits packed by volunteers for Read Across America Day.
