United Way, Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida and 130 volunteers honor Martin Luther King Jr. through a day of service

Volunteers beautified Camp Mahachee for the Girl Scouts

United Way of Miami-Dade honored and celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. through volunteerism. More than 130 volunteers rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty for a beautification project at Camp Mahachee, an 11-acre campsite where the Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida build leadership skills, and learn about teamwork and the outdoors. The Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida is a proud United Way-funded agency.

Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘what are you doing for others?’” United Way volunteers answered that question by helping beautify the campsite, which is an important asset for the Girl Scouts to continue learning from nature and how to preserve it.

Volunteers painted four cabins used for overnight camping, treated and repainted 40+ metal awnings, laid mulch around the cabins and cleared up invasive plant species surrounding the area. The volunteer project was sponsored by Assurant, with support from Bank of America and the Jose Milton Foundation.
