Filiberto, a husband, father and grandfather, retired in the early 2000’s to take care of his ailing wife. In 2011, after his wife’s passing and the sudden passing of his daughter-in-law three weeks after, Filiberto found himself helping his son Rey raise his two boys, then 4 and 5 years old.
With the passing of time and this newly added responsibility, Filiberto began to need some help of his own. That’s where United HomeCare, once a United Way pilot and now a partner agency, came in. The agency is aimed at helping families care for their elderly relatives while remaining in their own home. They provided Filiberto with someone to help him with household chores such as cooking, cleaning and other essential errands around the home. Thanks to the support Filiberto receives, he is better able to help his grandsons prepare for life and the road ahead.
Through his counselors at United HomeCare, Filiberto was also nominated for United Way’s Golden Wishes award, an initiative that fulfills long-held dreams by granting special wishes for local older adults. As a winner, he was awarded a four-day cruise. It was his first vacation in over a decade. “I don’t know how to thank United Way and United HomeCare,” he says. “To me, it changed my life.”
