Transitioning back to civilian life isn’t easy for many veterans. When Derek was in the military, he was a leader. But when he returned home, he couldn’t muster up the energy to even go to class. His house was going into foreclosure. He felt nobody understood what he was going through.
“Getting out of the military was the first time that I knew I suffer from PTSD,” he said. He found United Way Mission United, a United Way-funded program that helped him reacclimatize to society. Mission United gave him the tools and the action steps needed to help with all of his financial issues. With that new mission, Derek got to see himself again as the leader that he thought he’d lost. He now has a renewed sense of possibilities.
