MAVEN Project launches a medical telehealth program to help the uninsured

Our United Way and Health Foundation of South Florida have awarded a $40,000 grant to The MAVEN Project (Medical Alumni Volunteer Expert Network) to support the launch of a pilot telehealth program which links volunteer physicians to community health centers via skype-like technology to improve health care access for those most in need in Miami-Dade County.

Established by Dr. Laurie Green and her cousin, Miami’s own Dr. Barth A. Green, the MAVEN Project facilitates timely access and quality healthcare for underserved communities by linking their volunteer physicians, often semi-retired and newly retired, to local community health centers – free clinics, federally qualified health centers and health care organizations using telehealth technology.

According to Dr. Laurie Green, president and founder of The MAVEN Project, “a collaboration of The MAVEN Project, the United Way of Miami-Dade, Dr. Barth Green/The University of Miami, and the Florida Association of Free and Charitable Clinics, the Miami-Dade Telehealth Program will engage an array of volunteer physicians, clinics, leaders, organizations, and others for a common, long-term goal — to improve timely access to quality healthcare for vulnerable populations in Miami-Dade County.” She added, “physicians — especially semi-retired and newly retired — are an untapped source of volunteers who, when paired with telemedicine technology, can remotely provide much-needed health care to medically underserved patients. We are gratified by the support from Health Foundation and the United Way to address the need for timely access to specialist consultations at free clinics.”

Free clinics face numerous challenges such as financial constraints, limited resources, transient staff and difficulty providing specialty care to meet the needs of their patient population. MAVEN Project volunteer physicians will be matched with free clinics to provide consultation, teaching and mentoring for medical providers serving the uninsured, Medicaid patients and other vulnerable populations.
