For the third straight year, United Ways across Florida, including our United Way, will be speaking with one voice this legislative session – continuing their advocacy on behalf of ALICE families (Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed). Through the 2019 Florida United Way Consensus Legislative Agenda, United Way is rallying the Florida legislature to expand tax and financial education programs for working families, increase funding for quality early education programs and other supporting services and provide additional health care services for Florida’s children and older adults, all strategies effective in relieving the financial strain ALICE families face.
Our research indicates that 30 percent of Florida households with a regular income are only one family emergency away from falling into poverty. In Miami-Dade that number is around 37%. ALICE families are defined as people who work, earn more than the Federal Poverty Level, but can barely cover the basics: housing, child care, food, health care and transportation.
