Harve A. Mogul, former United Way of Miami-Dade president and CEO, will receive the Tocqueville Award for Outstanding Philanthropy for a lifetime of service, dedication and passion. Throughout his career, he’s raised more than $2 billion and launched groundbreaking initiatives that have moved the needle on education, financial stability, health and disaster response.
During Mogul’s tenure, our United Way demonstrated its leadership in creating innovative responses to community challenges ranging from assisting workers during the shutdown of Eastern and Pan Am airlines, the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew, the assimilation of Cuban and Haitian refugees following a change in U.S. immigration policies, post 9/11 recovery and natural disasters in the Caribbean and across the United States.
Mogul also left his mark on education in our community, by helping to develop and launch the United Way Center for Excellence in Early Education. The Center continues to elevate the quality of early childhood education not just in Miami-Dade, but around the world.
In addition to his work in education, Mogul also worked hard at strengthening another one of our United Way’s pillars, financial stability. By working with key volunteers and community partners to launch the United Way Center for Financial Stability in 2009, our United Way was able to address economic hardships facing individuals and families. In 2016, United Way Mission United was launched to help veterans re-acclimate to civilian life.
Under his leadership, United Way of Miami-Dade earned national recognition as one of the leading United Ways and nonprofits in the country. Mogul transitioned our United Way into an organization focused on community outcomes, system change and collective impact, aligned around three key areas – education, financial stability and health. In his nearly 27 years at the helm, total revenues grew from $21.5 million to $55 million and total assets from $5 million to $99 million, which just further proves how deserving he is of this award.
