When philanthropy meets community, there’s no end to what we can do to build a stronger Miami – like investing $34.1 million in community programs, including $23.8 million to strengthen the education, financial stability and health of our friends and neighbors.
“Investing in high quality programs is one of our key strategies for creating lasting impact that improve the odds for our children and families,” Harve A. Mogul, president and CEO, said.
“These investments, coupled with our advocacy work, our research, planning and convening efforts, our collective impact focus and our public awareness outreach, align with our strategic goals to improve the education, financial stability and health of our community, today and for generations to come.”
Fighting for a stronger Miami
We work with hundreds of local volunteers who assess community needs and rely on them to make recommendations to fund programs to ensure that:
- Young children get off to a good start in school and in life
- Youth receive academic and social support to graduate high school
- Residents have access to health care and lead healthy lifestyles
- Families in crisis get back on their feet and pave a pathway to financial stability
- Older adults remain healthy and independent
This past year, we funded 117 outcome-driven programs at 56 local, non-profit and health and human service agencies as well as invested in strategic United Way-driven initiatives like the United Way Center for Excellence in Early Education, the United Way Center for Financial Stability and Mission United.
Empowering educators, championing children
We invested $13.7 million in education-related programs to:
- Raise the quality of early education programs and expand access to more children
- Ensure that school-age children have safe and enriching activities after school
- Help families better understand children’s needs and inform them of the programs available to help youth succeed
Paving a way to financial independence
We put $2.3 million to work empowering families with a pathway to better employment, higher incomes, financial literacy, and savings and assets. From helping families prevent homelessness and assisting them with basic needs during emergencies to offering young people assistance with choosing a career, we’re training, coaching and helping neighbors of all ages reach their goals.
A prescription for strengthening our community
Another $3.5 million was invested to help individuals, families and older-adults gain access to quality health services. From preventive health screenings and support for caregivers to promoting healthy eating and cooking to children and families at 45 schools across Miami-Dade, we’re strategically using funds to bring lasting change to our community.
Other major investments included $551,723 to address critical community needs such as a 24/7 community helpline, funding for emergency services for victims of disasters in Miami-Dade, assistance to children in the foster care system and emergency shelter for adolescents in crisis. $3,617,194 was also set aside to help strengthen local nonprofits so they can be more effective and outcome-focused.
