Harve A. Mogul, United Way of Miami-Dade president and CEO, to transition to president emeritus

United Way launches search for new CEO

This morning, the United Way board approved the launch of a search for a new president and CEO upon accepting Harve Mogul’s notice to step down from his current post, announced United Way board chair Miguel Farra. Mogul will continue to serve as president and CEO until a successor is onboard, at which point he will transition to a new leadership role, as president emeritus, focusing his energies on building United Way’s Endowment, managing key donor relationships and providing advice and counsel on other key strategic issues.

United Way board member Sheldon Anderson will chair the search process along with a committee comprised of board members, volunteers and community leaders. The board is in the process of recruiting a national search firm to spearhead the effort, and plans to have a new CEO hired by the fourth quarter of 2017. The timeline will allow for broad community input and ownership in the process, as well as ample time for the onboarding of a new CEO.

“Harve approached a few of us on the board more than a year ago to begin a transition plan for a new CEO. After nearly 26 years in the post and with the organization in a strong and stable position, he felt the time was right,” Farra said. “Harve and the entire board are committed to a thoughtful and seamless transition that will result in us securing the very best next leader for this United Way – someone who can build on Harve’s extraordinary leadership and legacy and continue to move the organization forward in its mission of building community.”

Mogul began his United Way career in 1973 in Baltimore, MD. Before assuming the role of president and CEO in January 1991, Mogul held positions in Cleveland, OH; Pittsburgh, PA; and Winston-Salem, NC. Throughout his United Way career, Mogul has been responsible for raising more than $2 billion.

Under his leadership, United Way of Miami-Dade has earned national recognition as one of the leading United Ways and nonprofits in the country. Over the years, he has transitioned this United Way from a transactional fundraising/grant-making one to an organization focused on community outcomes, system change and collective impact aligned around three key areas – education, financial stability and health. During his tenure, United Way of Miami-Dade has demonstrated its leadership in creating innovative responses to community challenges ranging from the shutdown of Eastern and Pan Am airlines, the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew, the assimilation of Cuban and Haitian refugees following a change in
U. S. immigration policies, post 9/11 recovery and natural disasters in the Caribbean and neighboring communities.

In 2007, United Way of Miami-Dade opened a national best practices teaching and learning initiative, called the United Way Center for Excellence in Early Education, dedicated to elevating the quality of early childhood education in Miami-Dade and beyond. In 2009, United Way opened the Center for Financial Stability to address economic hardships facing individuals and families. In 2016, United Way launched a third special initiative, Mission United, to help veterans and their families re-acclimate to civilian life. In his nearly 26 years at the helm, total revenues have grown from $21.5 million to $56 million and total assets from $5 million to $51 million.

In addition to United Way, as a campaign director for Ketchum, Inc., Mogul helped plan the national campaign to raise $100 million for the U.S. Holocaust Memorial and Museum in Washington D.C. Prior to that, Mogul served in the United States Peace Corps from 1964-66, taught fifth grade in Baltimore, and worked with community planning and advocacy organizations.
